Home Sweet Home
Here is a list of supplies you will need when you bring your puppy home.
Nutrical
You will need to get Nutrical or another brand of calorie supplement to have on hand. Especially if you have a small puppy it can literally be a life saver. If you do not have any Kayro syrup will work in place
Crate or Play Pen
They need a safe place to be when not supervised or when you are not home. Having free roam of the house unsupervised can be very dangerous for a puppy. You can even attach the wire crate to the wire playpens.
Puppy Safe Toys
I recommend Kong toys as they are safe for chewing. Make sure to take away any toy that gets chewed up or is small enough to swallow. There are also enrichment toys that will keep your pups busy while you are gone. Its great for entertainment and learning.
Toothbrush
Brushing your dogs teeth is very important. Small breeds are prone to bad teeth. This will help keep your dogs teeth and gums healthy. Having dentals are also very important to a healthy dog. Bad untreated teeth can be deadly.
Shampoo
Gentle shampoo that is safe for puppies. Oatmeal shampoos are easy on their skin as well.
Dog Food and Treats
You can either use what we feed or something else. If you choose to get a different brand you will need to gradually mix the two together in order to not upset their stomachs. It is not good to just switch immediately. If you plan to make your own food please talk to your vet first about what ingredients are needed. Size appropriate soft treats are best.
Dog Beds or Blankets
Your puppy will want somewhere comfortable of their own to lay. There are several different types of beds. I have found they like ones that have sides to curl up in. You may also just want to have a blanket to lay inside their crate.
Harness and Leash
Only use collars for identification tags or Rabies tags. Collars can damage their trachea if they pull. Take off when not supervised as the tags can get stuck in vents or crates and cause death. Make sure harnesses fit properly so they are not able to back out of them.
Grooming Tools
Slicker brush, steel 2 level comb, and rake are all good grooming tools. You will also need a small pair of scissors to trim and nail clippers.
Food and Water Dishes
I recommend something that will not tip over and spill. Puppies can be messy. They also make food puzzles that are great enrichment. Also a travel pop up bowl is nice to have.
